
Sister Mary Dee Ellis died on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 after a valiant battle against brain cancer. She attended Immaculate Conception elementary school and Immaculata High School in Somerville, NJ and then went to the University of Notre Dame in Baltimore, MD where she was a dual varsity athlete, a biology major and music minor and graduated with honors.
Sister Mary Dee entered the religious congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Immaculata, PA shortly after graduation and professed religious vows in August 1998. Sister Mary Dee went on to teach elementary school at St. Cecilia School and St. Laurence School in Pennsylvania before being assigned to the missions of Peru and Chile where she served in educational, pastoral and leadership roles during her twelve years in South America.
Returning to the United States in 2014, Sister Mary Dee was assigned to Formation Ministry for her Congregation, most recently serving as Directress of Novices. She continued her education, completing a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership in December 2017. Sister Mary Dee is survived by her parents, Ted and Margie Ellis, her brothers Tom (Kate), Jim, Paul (Trinh), Mark (Sydney), her sisters Kathy, Ann (Hunter) Woolley, 11 nieces and nephews and her local community from Villa Maria House of Studies, Immaculata, PA, the IHM Formative Community, and her congregation of IHM Sisters.
The family of Sister Mary Dee has established the Sister Mary Dee Ellis Memorial Scholarship, the purpose of which is to honor the memory of Sister Mary Dee, with the intent of inspiring others to carry on her commitment to Catholic education and selfless service. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a high school student attending an IHM secondary school.
The Scholarship Fund is hosted and administered by the Foundation for MetroWest, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 public charity. If anyone is interested in donating to the Scholarship Fund, they can make a donation to the Foundation for MetroWest, designated for the Sister Mary Dee Ellis Scholarship Fund (as described below).
